Tattoo tourism: inkworthy destinations

A tattoo can be the ultimate souvenir, more memorable and permanent than any snow dome or tea towel — providing, of course, you choose the right one.

Unfortunately, it's pretty easy to get carried away and come back from holidays with a tattoo you'll later regret, or even a nasty case of blood poisoning. Many a traveller has lived to regret a hula dancer they went for on a bucks holiday in Hawaii, a yin-yang symbol after a yoga class in Thailand, or an "om" on a gap year in India.

To get a tattoo that's more imaginative, and also has some street credibility, it's wise to do a little research. You can't just wander in off the street to meet the world's top artists. You have to make an appointment, sometimes years in advance. If you're serious about getting ink from one of the world's best, check out this our list of highly respected tattoo studios around the globe:

Los Angeles, US

One of LA's best-known tattoo artists is Mister Cartoon, who has tattooed the likes of Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Dr Dre, Beyoncé and 50 Cent. But unless you're a celebrity, hip-hop artist or gangsta, you can basically forget Cartoon, because he's so phenomenally popular.

A better option is Lowrider Tattoos, a studio in Fountain Valley, California, famous for its intricate black and gray tattoos, which are no less beautifully layered and shaded than a Michelangelo masterpiece.

There's also Kat Von D, star of LA Ink, who is based at High Voltage Tattoo in West Hollywood and is famous for her photo-realistic portraits.

New York, US

Invisible NYC is an appointment-only studio and art gallery, where patrons can "experience art while art is being created". Founded by artist Troy Denning, Invisible NYC's designs are incredibly ornate, technically flawless, and inspired by Japanese and oriental art.

There's also New York Adorned and Brooklyn Adorned, where talented artists offer a mix of Japanese, Americana and tribal designs.

Honolulu, US

When Mike Ledger was based in New York at NY Adorned, his waiting list was three years long. Now that he's based in Hawaii (930 McCully Street, Honolulu; +1 808 945 9797), it's much easier to get an appointment with this tattoo legend. He specialises in large-scale Asian-inspired bodysuits but will happily create much smaller designs and aims to give his customers an experience they'll never forget.

For traditional Polynesian tattoos, try Soul Signature (1667 Kapiolani Boulevard, Honolulu; +1 808 330 5612), where artist Suluape Aisea creates striking designs using a traditional hand-tapping technique.

Bangkok, Thailand

For a traditional Thai tattoo using long, ink-filled needles — made famous by Angelina Jolie — ask around at Buddhist temples, where monks specialise in this ancient technique, provided you've got the balls to take a risk!

For something more contemporary, Max Tattoo on bustling Khaosarn Road is probably one of the most renowned studios in Bangkok. The artists execute an array of different styles, but are skilled enough to ensure you'll walk away with something polished and original.

Auckland, New Zealand

Robbie Williams might have one, but there are strict rules about what type of Maori designs can be tattooed on your skin, depending on your genealogy.

In Tolaga Bay, Uruora Moko Studios specialises in moko (for Maoris only) and kirituhi, a form of Maori design that allows non-Maori the participation in Maori skin art, where Mark Kopua is one of the country's top artists.

In Auckland, there's appointment-only studio Moko Ink, which has art directed designs for films such as Once Were Warriors.

Barcelona, Spain

It might seem odd to get a Thai-style tattoo while you're travelling in Spain, but Jondix is considered one of the world's most talented specialists in Buddhist tattoo art. Jondix has tattooed celebrities, but won't say who, and says his typical customers are open-minded, spiritual and "progressive". He refuses to do colour tattoos or anything political or satanic, and his waiting list is up to three months long.

Brighton, UK

Nine is a famous studio that reflects the alternative spirit of Brighton, which is home to the likes of Nick Cave. Ask for Ade, who creates astoundingly beautiful, intricate artwork.

I have a alot of my body tattooed and i can say this that it is art and expression and also addictive and can highly recommend Jay-boy from picton tattooes as a great artist and a great bloke so if your lookin for a tattoo thats the place to go....
Multiy award winning artists Jaff and Russ at Tattoo Paradise on the Gold Coast. Best freehand artists on the coast and if not australia. Check em out!!!!! www.tattoogoldcoast.com.au
I agree with the above but I don't think that tattoos express somebody's individuality anymore than anything that anybody does. I feel that they express membership to a kind of club which is why I have tattoos that are not visible and I don't show them to people that often even though they are very good. I was hoping this article might offer more insight than a simple internet search - oh well. Australian media... Love it and hate it. . . Anyway - would like to find somewhere good in Vietnam to get done but there is a distinct lack of art here so I don't know what my chances are.
Anyone reccommend any artists in Adelaide? I've made a booking with a studio in Henley Beach, but haven't heard much about anywhere else. Any suggestions muchly appreciated.
Merbein, (Northern Victoria, Australia) is best known for grape and citrus growing -not, perhaps, where one might expect to find a tattoist of rare artistic talent.... It is, nonetheless, home to a lady known among the tattooed of Australia as "Scarlet". Her clientele come from far and wide for her to ink them with her strikingly beautiful, finely-shaded, intricately-lined, custom-designed tattooing- from as far away as Emerald, (the Sapphire-Mining town in North Queensland) to Sydney, Adelaide (the South Australian Capital), and even further afield. If you're into skin-art, and travelling in Australia, look for "Scarlet Ink" (her salon) in Merbein, Victoria.... I've travelled widely -in North and South America, Asia and Australia- and the latter country continues to surprise me with the un-hyped but frequently startling talents of people living there (in some of the remoter areas of the planet).. The Aussies are a modest lot ! .
Well guys and girls I love tattoos and I have to say I have always and still do have a professional job. I am a 'NORMAL" country guy that has never been in trouble with the law. But I am tattooed alot..Its funny as hell that the Tatts I have make me look rough as guts (If I want to) but really I am a gentle giant...So I don't care what others think I just get tattooed for ME as I know what I am like and that's all that matters. Now if you want a GREAT tattooist who has a nice tattoo table side manner knows his stuff and is just a really nice guy as well as a brilliant tattooist then you have to go and see Bill at Bills custom tattoos Oxford Street Sydney www.billscustomtats.com.au Tell him the guy with the tiger stripes sent ya he will do a great tattoo on you and you will enjoy the chat with him...I cant wait to get more tiger stripes next week...Remember tattoo for you not others!!!
i completly agree with v from canberra. i am only 20 and have a few tattoos have a great job as a conveyancer in a law firm and studying law external and have just purchased my first home. i dont think tattoos should be frowned upon. they are a expression of how you feel or what your hertigage is or just simply express your insterests. So all i have to say to Maris from sydney and lightman is that i dont really think that you know what you are talking about.
Highly recommend Flauntboy Tattoo in Cameron Street Launceston. Very skilled artist. He has a waiting list of clients, but the wait is worth yet. Oh by the way, I have 2 tattoos and four qualifications.
cheers to V Canberra. I own a small business and have tatts. My bus is going very well and judging me by my tattoos is a stupid thing done by stupid people. i am a family man who loves life and my tattoos. I am booked in for this wed to get more!!! I can HIGHLY Recommend JAY from PICTON TATTOOS great work great bloke!
I have 3 tattoos and I dont regret any of them as they all have a special meaning for me, I hate when people judge you just because you have a tattoo as we are just normal people who like tattoos I know lots of people who have very respectable jobs and careers who have tattoos. I also recomend the Crossroads tattoo parlour near Glendale for portrait or animal tats and ask for Jay as he does the best animals and for very reasonable prices to.
