Vancouver has a wide array of accommodation options to suit most budgets. Our Insider has the unbiased dish for you.
Urban Hideaway Guesthouse
Perfectly located in the heart of downtown, it's easy to miss this cozy sleepover. Push through the inauspicious entrance and head upstairs for a warm welcome and a series of great value, home-away-from-home rooms — the loft is recommended and is the only one with a private bathroom.
Westin Bayshore
Nestled on the seawall near Stanley Park, this sleepover feels like a resort in the city. The rooms have a business hotel feel but extras include a well-equipped gym and a popular kids club. Best of all is the outdoor pool where you can lounge with a cocktail and overlook sea-to-sky vistas.
Fairmont Hotel Vancouver
The swanky, heart-of-the-city Fairmont is the kind of place you'll want to dress-up just to walk through the lobby. There's a wide array of room sizes — some are surprisingly small but all have the same classic décor — and the hotel has a walk-hungry dog if you're missing your pooch back home.
Opus Hotel
Vancouver's slickest boutique sleepover, the Opus is the place to be seen if you're a dot.com millionaire or visiting rock star. Rooms are lounge-cool — complete with moody dark interiors and feng-shui bed positioning — and the lobby bar is a favourite hangout for the city's rich young things.
Sylvia Hotel
Vancouver's favourite character hotel, the century-old, ivy-covered Sylvia offers a warren of room types, including pokey singles and expansive, family-friendly-suites. All benefit from the immaculate upkeep at this heritage, Bavarian-accented property and — more importantly — the friendly staff that make you feel like you've been living here for years.
Victorian Hotel
Heritage fans will love the hardwood floors, antique furnishings and bay windows in many of the rooms at this good-value downtown hotel, comprised of two knocked-together old buildings. There are great rates here off-season and amenities include free wireless access and a continental breakfast served just off the lobby.
Listel Hotel
Near Stanley Park and downtown shopping, the Listel is a quiet respite from clamorous Robson Street. Its mood-lit rooms and corridors are punctuated with original artworks and there's a small gallery just off the lobby. Live jazz enlivens its onsite bar and restaurant, which serves one of Vancouver's best brunches.
Rosedale on Robson
If you like the idea of having your own space, this apartment-style, central sleepover is ideal. The larger-than-standard suites each have kitchenettes where you can cook your favourite nosh. There's also a pool and sauna for winding down after a long day trawling the streets of nearby Yaletown.
Loden Vancouver
Rivalling Yaletown's Opus for the crown of best Vancouver boutique, the sleek new Loden combines a West Coast designer élan with comfortingly friendly service. The swanky rooms have knowing mod flourishes and the onsite resto-bar is a popular spot for an end-of-day cocktail. They also have a London taxi cab to drive you around town in style.
Moda
Reinventing a formerly grungy, century-old property, the well-located Moda is just steps from the Granville Strip party district. Rooms have been given a competently stylish makeover and just off the lobby you'll find UVA, one of the city's best wine bars.
