Raffles Hotel by night
Whether you're looking to splash out or keep to a budget, our Insider has the best unbiased Singapore hotel info out there.
Raffles
See how the other half (of 1 percent) live at this sprawling iconic palace. An all-suite hotel with private butlers, soaring ceilings, fine colonial decor and a sense of history unmatched in Singapore. A once-in-a-lifetime experience. Micro gym, nice pool, courtyards, galore, 18 food and beverage outlets and dozens of high-end shopping outlets.
Ritz-Carlton Millenia
Ultra-luxe refuge oozing understated, perfected elegance. Soak in the city's sexiest tub while soaking-up dazzling city views. It features more than 4200 pieces of art throughout, including Warhol, Hockney and Chihuly glass sculptures in the mother-of-pearl-topped lobby. Walk to Singapore Flyer — if you can get away from pretty pool, super-sized gym, and fab afternoon tea.
Valley Wing, Shangri-La Hotel
Rub elbows with diplomats at this exceedingly posh hotel-within-a-hotel. With in-room tea from a lacquered Chinese box on arrival, personalised stationery, L'Occitane amenities, customisable bathroom lighting and dreamy beds draped in custom-made Italian sheets, you'll enjoy high-stylin' comfy European elegance. It has all-day cocktails and finger food in the private lobby.
The Fullerton
Book a bi-level Loft Suite (they're half-price on weekends) at this stately, former post office and you may never leave your room. Except, of course, to dip in the stunning infinity pool perched alongside the Singapore River. Base rooms ain't bad either, layered in shades of ivory for meditative elegance. Superbly located.
The Scarlet
Crushed velvet, black lacquer, silver and gold. Oh my. This Baroque gem bursting with creative design is situated in a row of restored shop houses. Think Anne Rice — in a good way. Rooms are small but stylish. Rooftop Breeze Bar is a magical setting for drinks before dinner at erotic-tinged, Desire. Enjoy the open-air "Soda" hot tub and "Flaunt" gym.
The New Majestic
Uber-chic, fun house in preserved pre-war building splashed with the work of Singapore's best contemporary artists. Check out Garden Rooms with outdoor claw-foot tubs, plus a hanging bedroom, mirror room and aquarium room. No two the same. Peek at the restaurant below through portals in the lap-pool floor. Small but swish rooms with Bose, Keihl's and plasma.
The Intercontinental
Inspired by Peranakan culture, this well-located property has an airy, refreshing quality. Book a Shop House Suite and feel like you're staying in a small inn with wooden floors, plank ceilings, and a small balcony overlooking variety-packed Bugis Village shopping promenade. Small and sweet, breeze-blessed rooftop pool, good dining options
Goodwood Park
Great base if you're intent on running the Orchard Road shopping gauntlet around the corner. Small but tasteful rooms, muted tones, European-style chateau setting. Affordable dining options, renowned for pastries. Of the two swimming pools, Mayfair is far prettier, set in an enchanting tropical courtyard.
The Link
The first public housing estate converted to modern hotel. Rooms have Indian, Malay, Chinese or modern decor. Free in-room wi-fi, flat screens, ethnic-themed teas. Proximity to Tiong Bahru development lets you see how Singaporeans really live, with access to great cheap food and markets. Listen to birds singing at the stall next to the hotel.
Hangout @ Mt Emily
Like a hostel for sophisticates. Bright, cheery, modern. Rooms are small with no TV, but well-designed, Ikea-style. Common room has large TV, pool table, microwave, free coffee and tea, and seven computers with free Internet access. Unique rooftop "pool" showers you with refreshment. Ultra-clean shared and private baths available. Breakfast included.
