Malaysia Insider: Richard Ryan

I moved to Malaysia in 2004 to edit the society magazine Malaysia Tatler, but wasn't cut out for mingling with the high classes (I accidentally insulted the King within a month of arriving). An environment more suited to my lifestyle was found at The Expat, a magazine devoted to living in Malaysia. While there I also launched a glossy magazine called Senses of Malaysia to encourage the good people of Singapore to take their holidays on our side of the border. And I also have my own website, www.richardryan.co.uk.

What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday?

Sunday is all about hangover survival. Saturday nights in Kuala Lumpur are great and are rarely over before 3am. So Sunday will generally begin with a good fry-up at The Social, followed by gentle shopping at The Curve, and back to Bangsar to pick up some fruit at the Sunday night market.

How would you spend a long weekend?

For sunbathing and a bit of luxury I'll go to Langkawi. It's not the prettiest island in the tropics, but it's only a 40-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur, which beats faffing about with speed boats.

What's your idea of a good night out?

Watching a blockbuster with beers in a reclining seat at one of the various Gold Class GSC cinemas around the country.
