Cameron McCool is a freelance travel writer and photographer whose work appears regularly on NineMSN Travel, and a bunch of other Aussie and US-based websites and publications.

After hearing the call of Hawaii in 2010, Cameron made a point of exploring much of the Hawaiian archipelago before making the magical Big Island his new home.

What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday?

Sundays at Little Beach on Maui are pure magic. Imagine yourself lounging around on fluffy white sand as the sounds of a distant ukulele and a drumming circle waft over the warm afternoon air… If you ever visit, look for me – I’ll be the guy sipping on Longboard Island Lager with a blissed out look on my face.

How would you spend a long weekend?

I’d head over to the Kailua-Kona region on the Big Island’s East coast and get in plenty of swimming and snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay and the City of Refuge. If the lava was flowing from the island’s active volcano I’d stop in at Volcanoes National Park or take in a sunset lava hike from Kalapana on the way home.

What’s your idea of a good night out?

Dining is great across most of the islands, but nothing beats the restaurant scene and nightlife in Honolulu and Waikiki. I always try to catch First Friday in Chinatown, Honolulu, when I’m on O’ahu. Restaurants, cafes, bars, and museums stay open until late, there’s always a mix of locals and tourists having a great time, and because it’s Hawaii the weather is always great!
