Two weeks will allow you to experience a broad cross-section of Fiji. Follow this itinerary for the highlights of the islands.

Taveuni Island

Upon arrival at Nadi International Airport, catch the first available domestic flight to Taveuni Island on the east side of the country. Taveuni offers some of the best scuba diving in Fiji and there's excellent hiking and swimming in Bouma National Heritage Park on the east side of the island. Two nights are the bare minimum on Taveuni.

Savusavu

The flight from Taveuni to Savusavu on Vanua Levu is not currently operating but a small ferry crosses from Taveuni to Vanua Levu every morning, connecting with a bus to Savusavu. The laidback plantation town of Savusavu is a pleasure to explore on foot, and there's also good diving from here. Travel agencies in Savusavu offer a variety of guided sightseeing tours, including yacht tours. The do-it-yourself traveller could take a morning bus over the mountains to the sugar mill city of Labasa, explore the markets and main streets, and return to Savusavu on a late afternoon bus. Allow two nights in Savusavu.

Suva

Catch a morning flight from Savusavu to Suva. There are also overnight ferries several times a week. In Suva, visit the Fiji Museum, Thurston Botanical Gardens and Albert Park. After lunch, take a taxi to Colo-i-Suva Forest Park for some great rainforest hiking and swimming. The more academically inclined could take a city bus or taxi to the lovely University of the South Pacific campus at Laucala Bay on the east side of Suva. The university bookstore is the best in the country.

Levuka

The next morning, catch the first flight to Levuka, the capital of Fiji until 1882. Levuka retains its colonial character with a row of old wooden buildings along the waterfront, historic monuments galore, and some great hikes into the green hills behind the town. A dive shop offers diving in the Koro Sea. Stay one or two nights in Levuka, depending on your tastes.

Yasawa Islands

There are numerous small resorts up and down the Yasawa chain, some of them extremely basic. A good plan would be to cruise right through to the catamaran's last stop at Nacula Island near the famous Blue Lagoon. You should reserve your Yasawa accommodations in advance, especially if you want a bure (cottage). Otherwise, you could end up in a dormitory or having to pitch your tent. Oarsman's Bay Lodge on Nacula and Nanuya Island Resort on the Blue Lagoon are two of the top places to stay. Backpackers are well taken care of at the small resorts on Nacula and Tavewa, but the backpacker camps on Nanuya Lailai can be overcrowded and dirty.

On your way back to Nadi, you could do some Yasawa island hopping. Accommodations on Naviti, Waya, Wayasewa, or Kuata islands are not deluxe but they're quite adequate if you have bure reservations. Scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, and hiking are the main activities in the Yasawas. The glistening white beaches, colourful reefs, dramatic cliffs and open, grassy hilltops make this chain of islands the most scenic in Fiji. To avoid missing your flight, spend your last night at a Nadi hotel.

Hire a car and drive around viti levu, see how the real fijians and indo fijians live. May be poor in money terms but they are happy. Make a point to stop in at some markets, you'll get a warm welcome. Take back roads, drive up to the highlands and just explore. Make sure you ask the locals before you go swimming. Enjoy Fiji and it's people
