My connection with Fiji dates back to 1979 when Avalon Travel published the first edition of my travel guide Moon Handbooks South Pacific. In the years that followed, I visited hundreds of Pacific islands researching seven new editions. In 1985, Moon Fiji was spun off as a separate guide. I travel incognito to experience conditions as they really are.

What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday?

A perfect Sunday for me would begin with a long walk along the beach. Sunday is a good day to catch up on some reading. In the late afternoon, there'd be happy-hour drinks and dinner at a local restaurant.

How would you spend a long weekend?

Cities such as Suva and Nadi close down on the weekends, so on Friday afternoon I generally catch a ferry or flight to an outer island. If in Suva, I head for Levuka. From Nadi, I escape to one of the Mamanuca Islands.

What's your idea of a good night out?

I'd begin with happy hour at O'Reilly's Pub in Suva. By 9pm the nightclubs along Victoria Parade and Carnarvon Street will be pumping up and I'd bar hop until I fell in with the right crowd.
