Probably a European in her past life, Jeanne first went to Amsterdam three years ago for a working holiday and is now based there as a design, architecture and travel journalist.
She still struggles amongst the tall Dutchies but can speak Dutch perfectly (when it concerns food). She has written about Amsterdam for Wallpaper*, Surface and Time Out and is currently an editor of the Dutch design news website Design.nl.
Favourite thing to do on a Sunday?
Something cultural, or catching up with friends. I'll see an exhibition or read magazines at the library and grab a cuppa upstairs with a view. There's always time for lunch at
Small World, coffee at
Koffiesalon or a drink at a brown cafe somewhere. Warmer months mean picnics or boat trips with food, champers and music. A flick at
Tuschinski tops the weekend off nicely.
How would you spend a long weekend?
To escape, I'll head to a forest near Amsterdam, a beach pavilion (only in summer) or visit a friend in Delft, Arnhem or Utrecht. Otherwise, it's a good opp to stock up on food at the markets and cook up a storm. I also love having the luxury to just potter around town.
Your idea of a good night out?
Begin with cheap Chinese or Italian, drinks at
Lux (Marnixstraat 403; phone +31 20 422 1412) or
Kamer 401 (Marnixstraat 401; phone +31 20 422 4453) and a DJ or band at the
Melkweg or
Paradiso. For something quieter, I'll pick a new restaurant from my Amsterdam dining bible
Lekker Amsterdam, put on a frock and treat myself to a loooong dinner, or enjoy a decent glass of wine at
Café Graves (Gravenstraat 10, +31 20 420 7741).
