Visas

Australian passports allow a 90-day tourist visit without visa.

Electricity

220V, 50Hz, two (round) pin plug.

Time zone

Central European time zone. GMT+1 winter (10 hours behind Sydney) and GMT+2 summer (eight hours behind Sydney). 20h means 8pm. For the half hours, eg. 2.30, the Dutch say "half three" so make sure you're totally clear when asking the time.

Currency

Euros (€)

Cultural/social conventions

The Dutch way is to kiss three times on the cheek — it takes forever to say hello and goodbye. Don't take it personally if Dutchies tell you what they really think, or push in front of you in queues. When walking around the Red Light District, don't photograph the girls unless you want to be told where to stick it.

Best times to visit

Amsterdam's weather is measured in shades of grey; however, when the sun shines, the city looks magnificent. Travelling either side of July and August will mean less crowds and off-peak hotel and entry prices. April to May is tulip season and September and October kick off the cultural season. Unlike her European neighbours, Amsterdam is not a Christmas city. December is about Sinterklaas and children receive presents from Saint Nicholas on December 5.

Amsterdam shines in all her glory on April 30, Koninginnedag (Queen's Day), the birthday of the Queen's mother. This is when the city turns into one giant orange flea market/street/canal party.

Bring a good jacket and umbrella at all times.
