Amsterdam: Hotel reviews

The College Hotel is run by hospitality students under the watchful eye of professionals
"Design hotels" are popular in Amsterdam and the city has a number of beautiful canal house hotels and heritage guesthouses.
Five-star with a twist
Dylan Amsterdam just oozes sophistication such that you will subconsciously start swishing your hips upon entry. Gorgeous courtyard canal complex and bar with restaurant in original bakery, and the intimate rooms are themed tastefully. The courtyard is splendid in summer.
Business bar
The Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is housed in a heritage-listed shipping headquarters near Central Station, with original marine-inspired interiors (so much marble!). Predominantly a business hotel, this is great for tourists as you can snatch up a bargain between July and August and on weekends. Rooms on higher floors have city views. The mini-bar is included in the price (yay!) and every room has an espresso machine.
Four-star ++
Back to school! The College Hotel is situated inside a 19th-century school building and is run by hospitality students (keep this in mind) under the watchful eye of professionals. Decor is traditional with a twist. The bar is popular with posh locals of Amsterdam Zuid and the restaurant (the old gym) serves up modern Dutch. The beds deserve a serious sleep-in.
Three-star (value)
Hotel V rocks. It feels more like you're staying at a (very funky) friend's apartment than at a hotel. Run by locals who are passionate about the city, the hotel provides a social concierge who can tailor-make your Amsterdam adventure. The rooms look chic without being stuffy and brekkie and wi-fi is included. Hallelujah!

A list to keep you covered

A list to keep you covered
For those who like new designer-ish hotels with a moderate price tag, Robert Ramon Hotel and NL Hotel should fit the bill, as they all have great city locations, cheery contemporary interiors and represent good value (especially in the off season). The new chain Conscious Hotels offers affordable accommodation with a conscience, with trendy rooms designed using sustainable materials and LED lighting, beds made from natural materials and the most friendly staff in town.
One-star with a view
Hotel van Onna is spread across three canal houses in the Jordaan. The no-fuss rooms show no sign of design, but if a view of a gorgeous, quiet tree-lined canal is what you're after, look no further.
Affordable luxury
A decent shower, good TV and a super king-sized bed: what else do you need in a room? CitizenM is a designer prefab hotel that cuts the crap to maximise luxury with minimum space. There are two locations — one at Schiphol Airport and ope at Amsterdam Zuid.
All in one- (to five-) star
Transformed by renowned Dutch designers, the former emigrant's hotel in the Eastern Docklands, Lloyds is the mother of all Amsterdam design hotels. Rooms range from one to five star (with an eight-person bed!), so go for a cheaper room and still enjoy the fancy-pants address.
Hostellin'
Definitely not stoner hostels, StayOkays are the most decent and affordable in town. Vondelpark has larger rooms and a more central location. But further east, Zeeburg is as designer as you can get, as its sprawled across a former school building with bright common spaces. The rooms are clean and sleep a max of six. All rooms have their own bathrooms.
Houseboats
If you have an itch to stay in a houseboat, get in touch with Frederic. He can also help you rent a shifty Dutch bike at the same time.

Longer stays

If you're planning on staying a little longer, there's a few of you or if prefer to have the privacy of your own apartment check out the apartments at Home & Away. Home & Away website.

Tips

Canal-facing rooms usually cost extra, but the view makes most of them worth the expense. Catch good deals in the off-season between November and March.
