Air India 'hostesses'

India's national airline, Air India, has come under fire after sacking ten female cabin crew members for being overweight. The crew had their employment terminated from the carrier's domestic arm, AI Domestic, this week, after being declared 'medically unfit for duty'.

The air hostesses (as they are still called in India) had appealed to Delhi's High Court against the decision to ground them for being too fat, but lost their case. The Bench pointed out that in the highly competitive industry of civil aviation, the company has to focus on the personality and physical appearance of its employees. "Statistics reveal that overweight persons face constant challenges to their emotions which include remarks from strangers, discrimination at work, lower self-esteem and poor body image," the judge said.

"Now, if you are just ten grams over, it’s goodbye,” Sheila Joshi, 51, one of the hostesses, told the press. "It’s ridiculous: weight is not an infectious disease. This is not a modelling job; we are not working a catwalk."

The maximum permissible weight for an 18-year-old and 152cm tall airhostess is 50kg while one between 26 and 30 years of age of the same height has a limit of 56kg.

Female cabin crew allege that male pursers, who also work the aircraft cabins and who face the same physical challenges as the female hostesses, are not made to conform to a particular weight standard. "Last year, an obese flight purser got stuck in the aircraft toilet and its door had to be dismantled to free him," an air hostess told the Times of India newspaper. "We have male flight pursers who weigh over a hundred kilos. If there is an emergency on board they would hamper the rescue operations rather than help it," said another.

What do you think? Does the appearance of an airline's cabin crew matter to you or do you think this kind of attitude belongs in the last century? Have your say using the comments form below:

its scientifically proven that u dont have to be skinny to be healthy. I d like you to think if i told all you skinny people out there to go lose your job and become broke and live without money because your too skinny for the job. Tell me exactly how u would feel if i said that?? DONT U UNDERSTAND??? people try starving themselves only to gain back the weight. U heartless people who say fire the fat girl because she's too fat are ridiculous. Because if the fat girl looses her job because of her weight then u skinny people should too. *** back wen u have the heart god gave you. You said go starve yourself didnt u? Y dont u! coz you'll miss the chocolate or chips or fried food?? these overweight people are way healthier then i am and im slim. I grew up with overweight sisters and i know, dieting isnt easy. Because if dieting was soo easy, why are scientists using so much money for research to help these people?? USE UR BRAIN!!!
To Wrap from Melbourne. Get over it! I have been called a sl** by heaps of fat women, simply because they are jealous. I just walk down the street dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and get called names by fat chicks. Fat women are super nasty when they want to be. Even my boyfriend and other friends have had to stick up for me, when big girls think they can say anything, but if I was to call them fat I bet they wouldn't like it. Just get over it. Lose weight so you are HEALTHY!
there is little enough room on planes as it is. Having an overweight person, who is meant to be able to move freely around the plane, would make life difficult for other staff members and customers. I'm glad! Too often of late we keep having to hear about 'real' women or curvy women. At least someone finally has the guts to call it what it is OVERWEIGHT and UNHEALTHY. The only thing I don't agree with is the rule not applying to men. It should apply to all. P.S lilith, some of the worst bullies I have come across are overweight women with issues who like to pick on healthier women because they aren't fat. I have had deal many overweight women who have attitude problems. Glad for once no one is making up excuses for them or names like 'real women' to make them feel better. Deal with your weight problems.
The term over weight is a much better term for the issue at hand. I believe that in certain industries there should be regulations in place to allow a weight range just like the police have. In the case of airlines I agree. Have you tried to move down an aisle and pass a woman hostie with slightly larger hips or have you been sitting in your seat and a female hosties *** rubs against your armrest? I can tell you now that if an issue occurs with a plane it ain't going to be fun getting past them. The air industry is much like the car industry, it has a sexy image. If you have a weight issue and it is difficult for you to find a way to lose weight then look for a job in another industry, if your overweight the police won't take you.. Another thing, there are many ways to lose weight and the one that people forget is doing exercise, not dieting so stop thinking in one direction.
I agree with what Air India has done. It is a pity that it doesn't happen in Australia with people employed in the police force and in the ADF. How can some big fat person protect us. I also agree with the court in India. Fat people are more likely to have medical and emotional problems. Before you all start having a go look at the ads put out about the waist size for men and women. And as for those people going on about genetic problems why is it that so many more people have these weight related genetic problems than 30 years ago?????
Many years ago when I flew for a domestic airline you were required to be a certain weight and not only would you not be employed if you weighed too much, you could definetely be fired for being overweight.!!...I remember a friend of mine who flew for Qantas and she was stood down for two weeks until her weight was OK and she was threatened with sacking if she didnt lose the required amount of weight in those two weeks.....she went on an all egg diet plus ran every day in Centennial Park and on weigh in scraped through to keep her job! Also then you couldnt be married, have streaks in your hair etc etc....
Reply to "Put Down The Fork Fatties!" & "Wonderfull Airline." You obviously don't understand that for different people its harder to lose weight. This is not a problem for me but my mum, she eats really healthy, exercises everyday, as well as swims and she can not lose weight. Has even tried dieting tablets & drinks. So she went to her doctor and they told her that her depression tablets are the cause of this problem. She only started gaining weight after she got diagnosed with depression. These are the only tablets that won't interfere with the many tablets that she takes for her heart conditon, which she was born with. So i know its pretty easy to say don't eat and get on a teadmill. For some it's not very easy to do, yet others can lose weight easily.
Agree from Perth "i totally agree with the airline ..fat people should be fired ..i mean why is it so hard to just loose the weight? just dont eat." How close minded are you???? For starters, you can't "loose" weight, you lose it sweetheart and second, don't you think that if overweight people could lose weight (if they so choose) they would? Not everyone that is overweight is because they eat too much, there are such things as medical conditions that cause it like Hypothyroidism. That, my dear is not something so easily controlled by simply not eating! Before you pass judgement on overweight people, look in the mirror and see if your teeth are straight, white? (because that to me is more fixable than being overweight!) Are you the epitome of perfection? I doubt it! FYI I am not overweight by any stretch, just not a close-minded moron like the imbociles that think being anything but thin is socially unacceptable! Grow up, get a life and take care of your own self!!!
To the person who wrote "I know this is shallow but I'd rather look at a thin person than a fat one." Well I've been blessed with good genes and have always been slim, I can eat lots of rubbish and not put on weight, yet I have friends who eat much healthier than I and can't lose weight. Yes some of it comes down to overeating, but some of it has to be genetic. However even though I'm slim I don't care if someone is slim, chubby whatever, because I can appreciate beauty in all it's forms. I look at Oprah for instance and I always think she looks beautiful no matter what her weight. But in any case looks should be irrelevant, why is that women are not valued for their personalities? You might be missing out on a wonderful person by only noticing "good looking" people. We all lose our looks eventually, does that mean grannys aren't worthwhile human beings cause they're not young and hot anymore?
it's the employer's choice, they should be able to fire or not employ anyone they want, it's THEIR choice, stupid fat people thinking they got the raw deal, they can't expect to be employed when they don't fit the criteria, this is the same as mute person complaining when they don't get a telemarketing job
