Shop like a star around Australia

They're constantly in the spotlight, so is it any wonder celebrities love to shop for the hottest fashion? Here's where to catch the A-list engaging in a little retail therapy Down Under.

Sydney

Country Road

Not every celebrity shopping haunt is stratospherically expensive. Take a bow Country Road, Australia's favourite men's and women's chain, where you might just find yourself browsing the racks next to the cream of the local acting scene. Brendan Cowell, Claudia Karvan and Toni Collette are regulars at the Westfield Bondi Junction store. Word has it that Country Road stores in Melbourne have their own star following too. From endless cotton and wool basics and on-trend accessories to party dresses and quality menswear, it's no wonder the word is out.

Willow

Within three weeks of opening last month, Willow had officially become Sydney's hottest celebrity shopping destination, with Mischa Barton and Kim and Khloe Kardashian dropping by. Local ladies of style and sound to shop here include Chrissy Amphlett of the Divinyls and Sneaky Sound System cutie Connie Mitchell. Since designer Kit Willow Podgornik shows her range at New York Fashion Week, she's firmly on the A-list's radar and can no doubt expect more international visitors to make a pilgrimage to her store, which doubles as an art gallery.

Leona Edmiston

Known for her fab frocks that become petite and curvaceous figures alike, Leona Edmiston is an A-list address for women of all ages. Her tiny Paddington store with its antique furniture and glittering chandelier has welcomed star shoppers such as Jodi Gordon, Kate Ritchie, Sybilla Budd and Ricki Lake. With fashionable neighbours including the Corner Shop, Ginger & Smart, Luisa Claire and Collette Dinnigan, chic William Street is a regular stomping ground for celebs, so keep your eyes peeled. Finally, make like a local and toast your purchases with a glass of pinot noir at the Paddington Inn at the top of the street.

Oxford Street

When the jet-setters hit sunny Sydney, they abandon their chauffeured cars to pound the pavement along the city's famous Oxford Street shopping strip. Starting with Puma (a favourite spot for the latest kicks, according to Michael Schumacher, Damon Downey from Sneaky Sound System, Getaway's Jason Dundas and funnyman Merrick Watts), many of them walk right up to Lisa Ho and Akira Isogawa at the intersection of Queen and Oxford streets. Hotspots along the way are Ed Hardy, Scanlan & Theodore, Come As You Are, Sass & Bide and Diesel, where Liev Schrieber, Megan Gale, Anthony Kiedis and David Williams have all picked up a new pair of jeans. Or two.

Melbourne

Bettina Liano

Rock chicks the world over make a beeline for Bettina Liano as soon as they land at Tullamarine. The flagship South Yarra store of this adored Australian designer has just been refurbished and now includes a deluxe "boyfriend chair" — actually it's a couch — for blokes to take a load off while their ladies vamp it up in the dressing rooms. Sex sells here. Whether it's Liano's signature denim or flirty frocks, you'll see why this boutique has become a must-do for the Veronicas, Pink, Shannon Elizabeth and Venus Williams among many, many other frockstars.

Peter Alexander

When they're not strutting their stuff on stage or screen, celebs must spend a lot of time in their PJs, if the famous clients who frequent Peter Alexander are anything to go by. The 20-year-old pyjama empire has grown from a catalogue and Web-based sleepwear business to having 18 stores in Australia and beyond. The South Yarra location is a fave of Paris and Nicky Hilton, Nicollette Sheridan, Mandy Moore and Rachel Griffiths, for starters. No, we're not telling what they wear to bed! Except Paris. She bought armfuls of slinky nighties, uggs, a seven-day pack of knickers and even PA's famous print pyjamas for Ma Hilton.

Brisbane

Blonde Venus

While the location beneath Fortitude Valley's iconic live music venue The Zoo has something to do with it, there's much more to Blonde Venus' serious star-pulling power. Owner Thea Basiliou's eye for the exquisite has seen her loving mix of Australian and international designer brands, including Lover, Mala Brajkovic, Dhini, Karen Walker, work their way onto the backs of visiting musos and actors as varied as Toni Collette and Juliette Lewis. Btw, Fortitude Valley has awesome Asian restaurants — Superbowl is a winner — plus bars and coffee shops, so you certainly won't leave hungry after a day of shopping.

Chelsea de Luca

With all those red carpets to tread, celebrities are drawn to sparkling jewels like moths to a flame. That's why jeweller Chelsea de Luca's stunning store is a must-see when in Brisbane. The divine de Luca prides herself on designing and handcrafting glittering original hair combs, belts, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and more, in homage to the 1940s. Star shoppers include Eva Mendes, Beyoncé, fierce fashionistas Trinny and Susanna, plus Aussies Elle Macpherson, Delta Goodrem and Lisa and Jess from the Veronicas. Tres chic.
