Sunshine Coast: Where NOT to go

Maroochydore

It might be the business heart of the coast, but central Maroochydore has little to offer visitors. The biggest attraction is the Sunshine Plaza shopping centre, which does have the distinction of having a large creek running through the middle of it, but is ultimately just another shopping centre.

Stick to the prettier parts of the Maroochy region such as the waterfront parks of Cotton Tree or the beaches of Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland. You can do a cruise or go jet skiing on the Maroochy River and there are lots of good picnic spots. For a drink or a meal, the Alex Surf Club is a popular spot with good food and great views.

The awful wharf

If you are going to Mooloolaba, steer clear of the wharf area, which is filled with tacky shops and takeaway food outlets. The Underwater World aquarium next to the wharf is well worth a visit, but go no further. Double back to the esplanade if you are looking for something to eat, or head straight past the wharf, down Parkyn Parade, to the low-key but excellent fish markets at the end of the spit.

And don't get excited if you hear about the "Loo with a View" promoted by the local tourism body as "world famous". It is just a viewing platform combined with some very ordinary public toilets and only worth visiting if you need a wee.

Attractions?

I would personally avoid big 'attractions' such as Aussie World, Sunshine Castle at Bli Bli and the Top Shots Fun Park — contrived attractions are not what the Sunshine Coast is about. And whoever gave permission for an Ettamogah Pub to be built on the highway at Palmview ought to be subjected to a public flogging.

The Big Pineapple at Woombye and The Ginger Factory at Yandina scrape through as worthwhile attractions because they at least relate to the local area. The Ginger Factory has a new bee show and honey tasting tour that is more interesting than you might think, and the on-site ice creamery makes really fab ice cream. And the Big Kart Track at Landsborough is saved by being the largest commercial track in the country.

Who needs to see that?

The Noosa National Park is one of the most beautiful places on the coast, but I generally try to avoid the (unofficial) nudist beach at Alexandria Bay — anyone who says nudist beaches don’t attract weirdos is deluded! It’s also a really dangerous place to swim, with dangerous rips and no surf patrols.

Souvenirs ad nauseam

It is not without its appeal, but the pretty hinterland town of Montville long ago disappeared under a raft of gift and lolly shops. None of the shops are particularly offensive, but do you really need a new pot holder or a tin frog that spits water?

There are a couple of authentic antique shops on the high side of the street and the quaint Poets Cafe is a good place to have a coffee or lunch, but then it is best to skedaddle out of town. There are worthwhile things to do nearby, such as walking in the Kondalilla National Park or driving the Maleny-Blackall Range Tourist Drive, and the nearby town of Maleny has the cafes without the kitsch.

I think that lady needs glasses. Mooloolaba beach is beautiful, also the surf club is great to have breakfast and look over the beach and watch the people go by. We have had four holidays at Mooloolaba and Noosa and think its great. Also the wharf is a great spot to have an afternoon coffee overlooking the water then go on a cruise to see the beautiful expensive homes. I just think she is a very hard person to please. From a person who will be holidaying in Mooloolaba very soon and not an old person either.
wowser maybe you should change your name to whinger and spellchecker and yes i did know i spelt a couple of words wrong but who cares!!!! ....as for the writer....typical snobby noosarite!!! .....and honestly wowser or whinger whichever one you like....thats my opinion and i am entitled to it.....no wonder there are places going bust because of the negativity....the wharf has some great things to d..the big pineappple still have their parfaits which are massive...maybe you should get out a bit more and look at the positives in all of these tourist attractions we have here on coast..
Spunkbubbles, are you joking? Do you not realise that this article's written by a local and is part of a bigger series of articles about all the great things to do here on the Sunshine Coast? And, honestly - you're 37 and you type and spell like THAT? Embarrassing ... I agree with the writer's take throughout the guide. Couldn't be more spot on.
The Sunshine Coast has always been compared to the Gold Coast and in my opinion (and from one who has lived in both places), there is no comparison. The Sunshine Coast has developed fast in the last few years and is no longer the sleepy cousin. It now has the diversity of attractions to appeal to a wide variety of people, without the tackiness and harshness of the Gold Coast, as well as being much safer and friendlier. I wouold mive back there in a flash if I had the opportunity.
We are about to move from manic Sydney to the Sunshine Coast. We like it because of the lifestyle options, proxity of Brisbane and the fact that there is so much to do and see all very close to Sunshine Coast. The only thing we will have to get used to is the humidity. We can't make the move happen soon enough.
are u serious!!!! oh my god...do u live here or was that a fleeting visit!!! i am born and bred for 37 years and you are so much off the mark its not funny...how dare you *** the sunni coast off like that!!! the bli bli castle is fantastic for the kids!!! it lets there imagination run wild and there medievil dinners they hold are brilliant..( hmmm maybe u don't live here cause if u did you would do your homework a bit better!!!) and as for the pub on the highway...why not build it there!!! we love taking the kids there on school holidays!!! maybe you should have asked the locals on where to go and not to go before you made your judgements...maybe you could come back and maybe get a local for a tourist guide who really knows where the great spots are!! but then again i am biased and i think it is paradise!!! run along back to the big smoke and go pick on it...
I have lived on the Sunshine Coast for the past 22 years and a number of women (and men) have been attacked in the Noosa National Park. This is pretty much common knowledge. As for the other advice, I think it is pretty spot on. I don't think the article is being too harsh- look at the title and purpose. I love the Sunshine Coast and I think its fantactic that the tourism industry is thriving but some of the tourism developments and 'attractions' are a bit feral. Australia Zoo is not to be missed!
I'm sick of these "traveller reporters" just completely ripping destinations to shreds and telling everyone that almost every great part about the place "isn't worthwhile". And now you've done it to MY home town. The Sunny Coast is absolutely amazing and I'd recommend that everyone in Australia should visit it. I've lived here my whole life and don't see any reason to move away. Get a life and start embracing the positives of a desination instead of writing it off as a waste of time. Geez.
Unique beaches...looking across to Old Woman Island from Mudjimba Beach is magic. Need excercise, then take a walk along Coolum Beach to Stumers Creek and then back again. Best golf course at Hyatt Regency Coolum. Noosa National Park with its boardwalk and views - keep an eye out for koalas. Sunshine Plaza is great - I had shopping withdrawals when I moved away from the area. The hinterland is a great drive and if possible include the township of Kenilworth and dont forget Imbil if you have time.
