Follow our Insider's tips to make the most of just one day in the Hunter.

On the road

On the drive from Sydney, it's a good idea to stop in at some wineries and stock up on local wines at the right price. Just remember to spit once you've tasted so you don't get picked up for DUI.

Afternoon break

Once you're all stocked up, head up the New England Highway to Muswellbrook. You'll be ready for a coffee, and the Hunter Belle cheese factory on the highway provides a relaxed atmosphere to stop for either a snack or a meal. It's a great chance to check out a cheese plate to get a taste for some of the hunters finest.

Overnight stop

Scone is a charming country town to spend the night in. Book into the Allcroft Guest House (Tel: (02) 65451545) so you'll have somewhere cosy to stay then head into town for a decadent dinner. The good news is the best restaurants in town both Kerv and Canter are walking distance from the accommodation so you can indulge in some lovely local wines and not have to worry about driving home.

The next morning

Now's the perfect time to get some exercise by heading up Burning Mountain. This is no ordinary bushwalk. The mountain was once an active volcano and you'll be able to smell sulphur and possibly see steam rising from the ground when you get to the top. The walk isn't particularly challenging for experienced bushwalkers, but remember to wear comfortable clothes, sensible shoes and take water.
