The Hunter Valley may not (yet) be well-known for its shopping, but with a little time and patience you can find some great stuff.

Liza's of Lorn

This stylish little shop is located in the small town of Lorn just outside Maitland. It stocks designer clothes from brands such as Verge, and offers a point of difference from other shopping in the area. If you venture out that way, it's also a good opportunity to check out the historic town of Morpeth and generally enjoy a trip to this charming cluster of villages. Tel: (02) 4933 0551.

La Mode, Denman

This find in Denman is a little taste of luxury in the countryside. It stocks clothes, shoes and accessories for all occasions and tastes. From time to time, you can pick up some handy items on sale, but it's really a matter of being in the right place at the right time. It's hard to walk out of this shop without picking up a little something for yourself. Tel: (02) 6547 2196.

Precious Pieces, Denman

While in Denman, clothes aren't all you can buy. This shop has a great array of gifts and homewares that are great for an indulgence or as a souvenir from your trip. Tel: (02) 6547 2016).

I know I keep harping on about the great food in the Hunter Valley, but this butcher does some tender cuts of meat and interesting marinades for stir-fries and the like. He also makes award-winning sausages. Take the esky and stock up!

The name alone will be enough to get chocolate lovers salivating. But this place does provide something a little different from your usual run-of-the mill chocolate experience. The owners aren't afraid to experiment and I hear the chilli chocolate is one of their most popular offerings.

An inspirational homewares store. I can't help but dream about an endless budget when I visit this shop. You can find high quality luxurious goods for your bedroom, kitchen and bathroom; as well as some lovely gifts to take home for others (if you can bear to give them away.) If you can't make into the store there's always online.

It's a toss up between listing this place as a café to eat at or a shop. This place makes a real effort to stock local produce, including the famous Baccos Bakery leaves. You can also buy pre mixed spices so you can make authentic tasting curries at home. There's much more to this café, and you can research it online at www.paddocktopantry.com.au.
