Seven days is the ideal amount of time to really explore the state, from one end to the other. Check out our Insider's tips on seven days in Tasmania.

Day one

Once you arrive in Hobart, jump in a rental car and hit the road, heading up the east coast. In just over an hour or so, you'll hit the coastal towns that comprise the Freycinet Coast. Buckland is first, with its famous convict-built church. Stop here and stretch your legs before heading further up the coast to Swansea — one of Tasmania's oldest towns. The beaches around Swansea are perfect for a dip when the weather's fine, but if it's grey spend your time poking around the galleries and historic buildings in town.

Coles Bay is up next, the perfect base to spend a few days in the Freycinet National Park, so find somewhere for a relaxing meal and a comfy bed — you'll need an early night! My pick for budget Coles Bay accommodation is the Iluka Holiday Centre, where you can rough it in a tent, or splurge on a cabin.

Days two to five

Rise and shine early, and get yourself to the Frecyinet National Park Visitor Centre, where you can either pick up a map and go for your life, or join an expert guided tour. I recommend spending the time (and money) on the Freycinet Experience Walk if you're a novice bushwalker, but still want to get out to the remote areas without having to navigate your way there. It's also great to have a guide on hand to tell you about the history and the native flora and fauna — it's fascinating. But if you're confident to go it alone, this is an option, and often a better one if you'd prefer to go at your own pace. Check out the Parks & Wildlife website for maps, tips and further information for walkers.

Day six

Drive from Freycinet to the northern town of Launceston, where you'll need to replenish with some fine food and wine after such a long trek. After a long period of being just a quick stop on the map, Launceston is fast becoming a destination in itself, with restaurants and other attractions really stepping up. Stillwater is the perfect spot for a long lunch to line your stomach before heading to the J Boag & Son Brewery for a beer tasting. Join a tour at the Boag's Centre for Beer Lovers over the road from the brewery itself. Hopefully you'll have your appetite back in time for dinner, so visit the multi-award-winning Fee & Me and I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Day seven

A visit to Tasmania wouldn't be complete without visiting some Tassie devils! Head to Devil's Heaven to see one up-close; if you visit at the right time you'll get the opportunity to hand-feed one of the crazy family of 30 devils they keep here at the largest wildlife park in the state. Wrap you week up with a drive to the far north-west corner, where you'll breathe the cleanest air in the world atop the rocky cliffs of Cape Grim.

I don't think a trip to Tassie is complete without seeing the beautiful Cataract Gorge in Launceston. With it's beautiful scenery, the history, and the lovely couple of cafes, and only walking distance from Launcestons CBD, it would be a shame to miss it.
