Broome and around: Hit the beach

Cape Leveque: great for swimming year-round.
Broome and the Dampier Peninsula provide some of the best beaches in Australia and you can often get them to yourself.

Broome: north of the rocks

Take your 4WD onto this beach for a 10km stretch. During the week you'll probably have the place all to yourself. Frequented by nudists, if you've wondered but never been brave enough to go bare this could be a great first opportunity!

Riddell Beach

This is a stunning stretch of sand between Broome's Port and Gantheaume Point, less than 10 kilometres from the town centre. Red rocks, tidal pools, dinosaur footprints and shells can be found. Take Kavite Road (off Port Drive) and any of the little tracks will bring you to a secluded beach where you can walk either left or right. Great for swimming on the right tide.

Willie Creek

Thirty-eight kilometres from Broome is the Willie Creek Pearl Farm. Definitely no swimming here (as there are several resident crocodiles), but just north there are several tracks to the left that will take you to uninhabited stretches of coastline. Only attempt this if you know how to drive in sand. Great for fishing, but the tidal pull can be strong. Only swim on a small tide.

Middle Lagoon

They call it nature's hideaway and they are not far off; not as well advertised as Cape Leveque, but just as beautiful and closer to Broome. There're several different beaches on Middle Lagoon's 20-hectare headland property and a range of activities, from fishing to snorkelling. Promoted as pristine and clear year-round, this spot is topped off by local Aboriginal hosts Peter and Traci who know the area intimately.

Cape Leveque

One of the region's best known Indigenous resorts, Kooljaman, is here. Two hundred kilometres north of Broome, there are several beaches around the area, but out in front of the beach huts is the most popular for snorkelling. Seems to be great for swimming year-round and there's no threat of stingers (poisonous jelly fish). Pre-book your accommodation if you want to stay here.

Coconut Well

A bit of a best kept secret and definitely a personal favorite, Coconut Well is the hideaway for Broome's rich and famous. About 25kms from Broome via first the Cape Leveque Road and then McGuigan Drive, there's access to the beach via Denham Road. 4WD only, make sure you know how to drive on slippery sand and always check tidal conditions before heading out there as you could easily get stuck for six hours if you get it wrong. The feature of Coconut Well is the lagoon which will fill on a big tide. This makes for some great drift snorkeling or lilo adventure on the incoming tide. Seek some local advice before heading out there — the landowners don't like lost tourists tearing down their driveways.

Get on a cruise

If you want to take in some really remote beaches, join one of the many extended cruises out of Broome or Wyndham. Around the West Kimberley and in the Buccaneer Archipelago you'd swear some of the beaches have never been visited before. One, in particular, is Silica Beach. A great way to experience some of these sandy spots is by camping on shore overnight. Buccaneer Sea Safaris has several options.
