Know before you go - the international taxi fare calculator

, Prev Next

Check out this really cool website,

It gives you an estimate of the fare of a taxi ride in cities around the globe, including Sydney, Berlin, London, Chicago, New York, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Toronto, Dublin, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Rome, Boston, San Francisco, Singapore, Dublin and Amsterdam.

Just enter your point of departure (Kings Cross, for example) and where you want to go (how about Newtown?), and the site will estimate your fare (to the penny) and your waiting-in-traffic time (to the minute).

Better yet, it gives useful tips on taxi etiquette in different parts of the world (like what to tip a Yank, how many Euros it will cost for each piece of luggage you schlep around Italy, and more). The site includes a Google map, so you can answer like a local when the cabbie asks "bridge or tunnel?"

I've given the taxi meter a test drive (pardon the pun) around each of my former stomping grounds in Oz, the US and Europe, and the site's prediction has come out bang-on what actual journeys end up costing. Give it a whirl and bookmark the site for your future travels.
