World's cheapest city for five-star stays

'Capital' city

Love five-star digs but simply don't have the cash to splash? Hotels.com has come up with a rundown of the cities where you can experience five-star luxury on a three-star budget.

According to the Hotel Price Index (HPI), Berlin was the world's most affordable city for five-star accommodation, averaging $192 per night.

The history-rich German capital just shaded Budapest and Beijing who were both followed by Bangkok. Perhaps the next index should reveal whether it is cheaper to just stay in cities starting with 'B'?

The likes of Prague, Las Vegas, Frankfurt, Istanbul also made the top ten which was rounded out by Dubai at an average of $238 per night. Melbourne proved to be the only Aussie city where five-star cribs won't break the bank, ranking eight with an average price of $228.

For $200 a night, the findings further revealed, Aussies could also afford four-stay stays in many of the world's top cities including Barcelona, Dubai, Hong Kong and Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, your bank account will be feeling anything but loved in the city of love — Paris, which proved the most expensive city in the world for five-star accommodation, averaging $499 per night, marginally ahead of New York on $498.

Los Angeles, London and Rome made the top five for most expensive cities for luxury lodgings, followed by popular Asian business hubs, Singapore and Hong Kong. Moscow and Barcelona also made the list while there are no bargains to be had in Bali as it ranked ninth.
