Cairns: Australia's adventure capital

Action men and women, listen up. Tropical North Queensland wants you!

There are more reasons to jump, snorkel or bungee your way around Tropical North Queensland than ever before, according to the region's latest global tourism campaign.

"Tropical North Queensland: Adventurous by nature" is the new tagline being used to promote Cairns and its surrounding tourist hubs like Palm Cove, Port Douglas, Mission Beach, the Daintree, and Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands.

Launched last month by Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ), the "Adventurous by nature" mantra sums up the region's two biggest assets: adventure and nature tourism. It's the only place in the world where two World Heritage-listed areas meet (Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest), and most of the local activities revolve around the natural wonders.

Popular activities in the region include snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, sailing, cruising, whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, hot-air ballooning, bushwalking, skydiving, four-wheel-driving, rock climbing, wildlife-spotting and jungle-surfing the rainforest canopy. Watch the above video for a hands-on teaser!

According to TTNQ CEO Rob Giason, the strategy was developed alongside Tourism Queensland's "Where Australia Shines" campaign, and "input was sought from more than 6000 Australians on what they were looking for in a Tropical North Queensland holiday."

“In Tropical North Queensland visitors love having encounters close-up with nature, sampling tropical luxury, and sharing the experiences with friends and fellow travellers," he said.

The region pulled more than two million international and domestic visitors from June 2009 to June 2010, raking in a huge $2.4 billion for the industry.
