Deep blue pockets: Fiji underwater resort offers luxury at $14.3K a week

Situated 14 metres below sea level, Poseidon Undersea Resort isn't your typical hotel destination. It's also not for the spendthrift, at a whopping US$14,300 per person for a week's stay.

The luxury underwater complex is set to be built in a lagoon off the shore of a private island in Fiji. It will offer 25 underwater suites, fully detachable for maintenance, as well as a bar, gym and a wedding chapel.

The risky venture is the being developed by L Bruce Jones, boss of US Submarines, Inc.

He believes that the addition of 51 above-ground rooms, a spa, a nine-hole golf course and tennis courts, as well as the natural reef attractions, will bring in the tourists.

Allaying safety concerns, the various rooms are all structurally separate, meaning that if a problem develops, it can be isolated. Phew!

Likewise, the thick plexiglass domes can be detached and lifted to the surface if issues arise.

At this stage, the project is still at least two years away from completion, with funding still being sought from venture capitalists.

Would you stay in an underwater hotel?
