Legs-in-the-air nightmare: Seats come loose on two US flights

There's only one thing worse than some annoying kid kicking the back of your seat during a flight — and that's your seat taking flight!

Unfortunately, passengers aboard not one, but two different American Airlines flights had that dreaded experience of their seats coming loose mid-flight at the weekend.

The first incident took place on Saturday night on a flight from Boston to Miami, when seats suddenly came unbolted in mid-air.

The passengers were moved to other seats (thankfully they were stationary), but the plane was diverted and had to make an emergency landing at New York's JFK Airport.

Loose seats were again discovered on a second flight between New York flight and Miami, sparking concerns about the state of American Airlines' carriers.

While no-one was harmed in either incident, passengers were still shocked by the bizarre occurrence.

"The seats flipped backwards," one passenger, who chose to remain anonymous, told ABC News in the US. Watch the video above to hear her description of the crazy "legs-in-the-air" moment.

American Airlines has taken eight of its aircraft off the runways for inspection, and the Federal Aviation Administration is looking into both incidents.

One would thought that seatbelt is part of the cleaning and checking of the aircraft before passenger can board the plane. I will check my seat and seatbelt from now one before taking my seat.
1999 flying from LA to SF the seat belt came away in my hand. My travellig companion thought I was playing with the Steward's demonstration belt until he realised it was the real one. Seems to be ongoing?
Have you seen the size of some people that sit in those chairs, its no wonder. There should be a weight limit. My partner had to endure a 5 hour flight LA to NY with a man of at least 300 pounds sittling in his lap as he was too big to sit in just his own chair. His wife of the same size was directly behind him. They were too big to sit together so others had to.
