Splash out on a $4.6 million floating island

Now here's a holiday that blows the mind and the budget.

An Austrian-based company has unveiled plans for ORSOS Island, a floating structure that's oceans away from your average houseboat.

From the artist's digital impressions (watch the video for a very cool glimpse at what it'll be like), this 37m-long, 20m-wide luxury water-world seems like a superyacht on steroids, complete with a palm-tree-lined sun deck, Jacuzzi, and a barbecue buffet area.

With 3300 square feet of living space, ORSOS has room for up to 12 people in six bedrooms, plus an extra room for the help (sleeping up to four people). The island can be moved to wherever in the world the cashed-up buyer wants.

The concept is pitched as a cheaper alternative to a superyacht, already estimated to be valued around $4.6 million. Not bad considering a gold and platinum-plated superyacht last year hit a record price of $4.5 billion.

Hospitality and real estate entrepreneur Gábor Orsós told Rex Features about his company's elaborate plans.

"With the progress of the project it became clear that the attractive and unusual concept of ORSOS Islands should not be limited to only a selected group of people," he said.

"Orsos Islands should reach a much broader audience, people with an awareness of modern life and a feeling of responsibility towards the environment."

Yes, he did say "Islands". The company will finish the first ORSOS Island in 2013, but hope it will be the start of a popular concept purchased by hotels and private holiday-makers.

The island will have a wind energy system and solar panels, with "plans to use the coolness of surrounding sea waters for air-conditioning".

Totally suited to muggy tropical climes. No sweat off your back though — simply tug the island elsewhere.

Looks like another nail in the coffin of those "low lying islands" that Global Warming and rising seas were going to flood. Nice idea though!
