Let the fur fly: UK airline launches check-in for teddy bears

Queues, baggage fees and surly staff: check-in desks aren't really a traveller's favourite place at an airport (unless you hear the magical words "surprise upgrade"), but one UK airline has decided to take action on the silent killer of all airport calamities: the lost teddy.

That's right kids, you can now check in your teddies so you don't lose them on the baggage carousel. Thomson Airways has launched a teddy check-in for junior travellers, called "Very Important Buddy" (VIB, get it?).

Kids can check in their cuddly ones from all UK airports that fly to Thomson Family Resorts, First Choice Holiday Villages and First Choice Splash World, across locations like Spain, Mexico, Greece and Florida.

As well as giving kids peace of mind knowing teddy will be kept safe and sound bumping around in transit, children get a special boarding card they can exchange for a VIP tag at the boarding gate.

According to Thomson, London's Gatwick Airport receives up to 30 lost toys a month, so it's high time to launch such a scheme.

"As a family friendly tour operator, we like to make a fuss of children travelling on our holidays, both in resort and on their flight, and we are always looking for new ways to enhance our customers’ holiday experiences," Carl Gissing, Thomson Airways Director of Customer Service said.

"We know that kids will love checking their toys in and taking home the VIB tag as a souvenir!"

Or they could just take the teddy on the plane. Just sayin'.

Would you check in your favourite teddy or soft toy at the airport?

Mother-of-two Joanna thinks it's "an excellent idea". Her kids think so too. Six-year-old Zoe and two-year-old Jack checked in "Ruffy the dog" and "Teddy".
