Nine things you've never done on the Gold Coast

Nine things you've never done on the Gold Coast
We all know about the tried and true tourist spots on the Gold Coast. So how about trying something totally different on your next trip? Leave the queues to the first-timers and check out these awesome alternatives.
Held hands with a raptor
If Napoleon Dynamite were to visit Currumbin Sanctuary, there is no doubt that his question, upon sighting a magnificent beast like Jessie, would be "Do the wedge-tailed eagles have large talons?" The answer is, "Yes! Yes they do." And the sensation when they perch on your hand, with said talons curled intractably around your leather glove-clad hand, is one of awesome respect.

The words "want a cracker" are the furthest from your lips, which are probably dry with lack of saliva. Gulp! The behind-the-scenes tour at family-favourite Currumbin Sanctuary lifts the bar for interactive nature experiences as you tour the pens out of public view, pat dingoes, check out the animal hospital and try your hand at the medieval art of falconry while feeding the carnivorous kites. Exciting!

Felt the wind in your hair, your mouth and your ... nostrils
Not many people know you can skydive on the Goldie, but when you think about it, it makes a whole lot of sense. If you're going to jump out of a perfectly good plane into the big blue sky, it may as well be above something beautiful — like a translucent green sea and a high-rise studded foreshore — with a landing pad of pure white mica crystals on Kirra Beach.

Gold Coast Skydive is the only "tandem" skydive business in the area. It's a slick operation which can have you from ground-hugging zero to freefalling hero in as little as 45 minutes. Sceptics will be converted into wild diving devotees. We were!

Eaten 'sirloin and seafood'

Eaten 'sirloin and seafood'
Not just a posh way of saying "surf and turf", "sirloin and seafood" is a stunning gourmet take on an Aussie oddity that usually resembles just what it is: a hunk of meat with a few withered prawns scattered on top. Find it at Bellakai (82 Marine Parade), a well-kept Cooly (Coolangatta) dining secret which breaks from the Gold Coast tradition of overdone restaurant interiors. Its appearance is as humble as the cuisine is superior.

"We like to focus on the food here," says manager Michael. The plump sirloin is cooked to your liking then heaped with Moreton Bay bug and juicy scallops and prawns. Bellakai is also renowned for its out-of-the-ordinary breakfast menu, which begins at 5am, thanks to its proximity to the New South Wales border and summer daylight-saving time zone.

Had a thrill ride you didn't have to queue 20 minutes for
Get your Spider-Man on! Currumbin Sanctuary's Green Challenge evokes images of recycling and hybrid vehicles but it's actually the newest nature-based adventure on the Gold Coast — and it's a blast! Essentially a rope course woven throughout the eucalypt and rainforest treetops (to heights of 14m in places) the Green Challenge, like the ski slopes, is broken into Green, Red and Black sections according to degree of difficulty.

Far from a glorified flying fox, these high-strung obstacles are based on the "adventure parc" concept, hugely popular in Europe. This is the domain of excited kids and ripped SAS-looking guys in khaki shorts, nonchalantly swinging, grappling and coasting across and down a series of sky-high rope courses. You must complete each stage before you can jump ahead.

Throughout the sylvan course it's likely you'll come eye to eye with koalas, who are blissfully unphased by less hairy dudes in their treetop turf. Allow about two-and-a-half hours to experience it all.

Seen a surfboard with a built-in motor
Surfers must visit Surf World, opposite Currumbin Sanctuary. Not only is there a collection of one-off surfboard designs with all kinds of odd innovations, including a chunky motorised board, you'll also see the evolution of the humble board, from huge plywood models to foam to fibreglass. Check out the cool retro surf movie posters and a library of surf movies which can be viewed on a wall-mounted plasma.

"Some people breeze through in half an hour," manager Mal Sutherland says. "Others pore over every board, touching them, feeling their weight, reading every description and then when they're done they'll stand there and watch surf movies for hours. It's like a religion to some people and I obviously love it, too."

Visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York ... (er, the new store at Marina Mirage instead)
Nothing says cool mall like a Metropolitan Museum of Art New York store on the mall directory. And the utterly transformed Marina Mirage shopping centre is literally cool, too, with its breezy central causeway giving glimpses of the broadwater and ships moored at the attached marina.

The "build it and they will come" theory has proved true with a new calibre of retailer attracted to the chic open spaces and spacious piazza style cafes. Find Zimmermann, Marcs and Calvin Klein Underwear as well as fun stores like Posh Pets which offers designer-wear for your pooch, including "Diva" T-shirts, "Bad to the Bone" hoodies and "Sniffany & Co" dog beds in chihuahua ($29.95) and Rottweiler ($295) size.

Had a one-on-one surf lesson with a big-wave surfer
Learn to surf one-on-one or in a group with one of Australia's greats, Michael "Munga" Barry. Munga teaches not only technique and safety to groups, families and individuals, but he instils a great appreciation in the power and spiritual importance of the ocean itself. His Godfathers of the Ocean school tutors beginners to advanced surfers and is accredited by both the Australian coaching council and the Gold Coast City Council.

Bought a better backhand
Pat Cash was Australia's only ever rock-star tennis player (well, the only one who was any good — sorry Scud) and his self-titled Tennis Academy on nearby Hope Island has the vision of being the premier tennis training academy in Australia. With only a brief visit, and a short intense session on technique with head coach of adult programs Mark Cook, we can agree the future looks good.

Mark instructed one-on-one on backhand technique, drilling the left-hand corner of the baseline with hundreds of balls until the new technique began to feel natural. "You need to build muscle memory through repetition," Cook says. "That's the only way to a better stroke." The academy also offers longer development programs for juniors and group adult clinics.

Visited Australia's cheesiest brewery
Cheese and beer don't exactly go together like a horse and carriage. Or do they? Sniffy wine connoisseurs will be horrified to learn that on Mount Tamborine (45 minutes' drive from the Gold Coast) the two share a roof at the new and already highly decorated MT Brewery and Liquid Amber Bistro & Grill.

This is a purpose-built venue offering sweeping views of the lush Gold Coast hinterland. The brewery combines cheese and beer tastings with quality meals to capitalise on the appetite which has been whet by all the sampling. Personal favourites include a to-die-for triple-cream brie cheese and Katya Imperial Stout, which is modelled on the stouts made for export to the Russian Imperial Court during the 18th century.

Mavis's Kitchen is a period style resturant run by the same family of gormet chefs for decades. It is a beautiful big old Queenslander property with gorgeous views and world class menu....yum!
I went for a beautiful trail ride at Numinbah Adventure Trails in Numinbah (1hr pretty and peaceful drive from the Gold Coast). A really pleasant 3 hour experience including paddock riding through cattle and wallabies and with an hour stop to rest, eat damper (cooked in a fire by the river), drink coffee and tea and then cool off with a swim in the gorgeous rock pool. They encouraged us to feed some damper to the turtles in the rockpool which they ate from our fingers...such an inexpensive and enjoyable day I can't wait to go again!
We went snorkeling at Moreton Island from the Gold Coast with Dolphin Wild, spent the day in the sun with the Dolphins, Dugongs and Turtles and snorkeled with thousands of fish around the Wrecks. We had an excellent day!
